Support for tagging in Outlook 2007, Windows XP files (Explorer), Gmail

We do have the power for this (testing internally now) so I just wanted to put the feelers out there for more comments. Who wants to see tagging in Outlook 2007, Windows XP files (Explorer), and Gmail? Which one would you like to see the most?

  1. Well, you have spoken to me several times, and I have been begging for tagging in Outlook 2007 and Vista, so I think you know my feelings! :)

  2. hi - I’d strongly prefer tagging in outlook 2007- still wonder wh microsfot has no functionality of this kind - I would also like tagging a lot in the general file system - think this structure is too rigid!

  3. Thanks for the suggestion Georg. Stay tuned for some interesting integrations, including OL’07 and files. ;-)

  4. Well, unfortunately, while upgrading to Office 2007 allows one to maintain earlier versions of the other Office applications (Excel, Word, etc), the option doesn’t exist for Outlook. So Outlook 2007 gets my vote for your next focus, followed closely by GMAIL. Interesting software from the sounds of it so I hope to get to try it out.

  5. Maybe I’m missing something here, but why don’t you use Microsoft “Categories” as your tags?

Right click on any mail, select categories then assign it to as many different Categories as you’d like. Then either keep all your mail in one big folder or have one inbox folder and one “All Mail” folder like gMail. Then setup your search folders with different categories for instant tagging folders!

  6. Tis true - you can use Categories, but in our opinion these are very limited. Here are a few of the limitations taken straight out of the spec that was written for the new software.

5.1 Categories are buried in a menu and consequently one must interrupt their train of thought to tag something. It would be nice if they could do this while viewing the categories and the messages simultaneously.
5.2 The Master Category List is buried in yet another menu. Creating a folder is much easier than creating a category as it’s done on the fly without leaving the Mail List window.
5.3 It takes a total of 4 clicks to tag an item; right click, select Categories, check category, select OK. This is far too many clicks.
5.4 The Categories dialogue is small and when there are many categories it requires a lot of scrolling to find them.
5.5 Categories cannot be sorted or searched like email can. The only method of category navigation is scrolling.
5.6 Categories are only available in the Mail List window. They cannot be used when composing or replying to a message. Again this interrupts one’s train of thought by forcing the user to send the message, and then remember to tag it after it’s sent.
5.7 All categories are shown when viewing them, including the ones that are unchecked. Again, when the category list is long, this makes finding the checked categories cumbersome. It would be nice to have the option of showing only those categories relating to the selected message or the full list.
5.8 Categories are not specific to the user. If a sender tags a message with Business and the recipient has Business as one of their own categories, the recipient will see the sender’s message tagged with Business.
5.9 Categories cannot be selected to show the messages as easily as folders can. One must first group the Categories which is a lot of clicking.
